A board meeting with a difference!
Our workplace Urban Surf classes are now available to book anywhere in the UK. To book a class for your workplace, call 0121 288 3396 or send an email to
- enquiry@lovelyandhealthy.co.uk.
The class duration and format can be adapted to meet the needs of your employees and the facilities available. Usually we teach our classes in a breakout area, conference room, canteen or meeting room. Classes can be anything from 15 minutes to 60 minutes long, but we usually recommend classes of 30 minutes or 45 minutes to most of our clients.
We will supply up to 20 exercise mats and Ollypop surf towels for your employees to use as part of our standard package and there is the option to purchase these at the end of the class. We can also cater for larger groups at an additional cost (to take in to account the extra equipment and supervision required).
Urban Surf is all about bringing the fun and fitness benefits of surfing, inland.
Surfing is a fashionable and fun sport, and a great workout for the whole body. However, traditionally it has only been a viable keep fit option for those privilaged enough to live near the seaside...until now!
Encourage your employees to get in to the habit of doing 30 minutes physical activity, five days a week by introducing them to something new and exciting like Urban Surf.
What goes on at an Urban Surf class?
As mentioned above, our class format can be adapted to meet the needs of the group we are teaching. We'll start with an aerobic warmup and dynamic stretches to prepare the body for physical activity, and we usually finish with some exercises to develop balance, coordination, flexibility and relaxation.
Set to an uplifting beech boys soundtrack, our workplace Urban Surf classes are a fusion of fun and challenging moves designed to develop the skills required to succeed in surfing the waves as well as the internet! Moving the body helps to reduce muscle tension caused by prolonged periods of repetitive movement or sitting still. Physical activity also helps to release endorphines which can help to reduce stress, anxiety, and low mood, allowing your employees to feel refreshed, relaxed and happy.
We include plenty of flexibility exercises to help keep the joints moving through the range of movement they are built for as opposed to lots of sitting at desks! Urban Surf is especially good for improving and maintaining flexibility in the neck, shoulders, wrists and spine. These joints can become particularly stiff and painful when doing lots of computer work, telephone work, driving or repetitive lifting.
The muscular strength and endurance section of our class helps to develop the inner postural muscles, improving core strength and the outer movement muscles which help to improve physical performance in sports such as surfing. For those wanting to improve the appearance of their body, this section provides plenty of toning and shaping exercises. Participants use their own body weight to develop their muscular strength and endurance in a similar way to the principles of yoga and pilates. Weight-bearing exercise also helps to develop and maintain strong, healthy bones.
Balance training is beneficial for everyone - but especially useful for older employees and anyone recovering from injury. We hear a lot about how to keep our heart and lungs healthy, but not so much about how to keep our balance system healthy. Your balance system includes all the senses in your body that tell you how you are moving, the brain which puts this information together, and the muscles that control your movements. This complex system needs plenty of regular 'practice'. As children we develop good balance by practising balancing activities for fun - like walking along walls, jumping, spinning and climbing. As adults we tend not to give our balance system the practice it needs. Health problems can also weaken the balance system. Urban Surf uses a range of simple exercises performed on the Ollypop surf towel to improve balance and coordination.
Nothing beats putting your skills in to practice in the water! We can recommend several good surf schools in the UK and Europe if you would like to take up the sport of surfing after attending one of our classes.
